Modern femto LASIK is an up-to-date and gentle treatment to enjoy a life without glasses or contact lenses.
Correction of ametropia, e.g. short-sightedness (Myopia), far-sightedness (Hyperopia) and astigmatism by means of the state-of-the-art femto LASIK is one of our most important special fields. We perform this procedure and other refractive laser procedures at our Refractive Surgery Centre Premium Eyes Düsseldorf - which is an International Reference Centre of the company Carl Zeiss Meditec. As one of two providers in North Rhine-Westphalia we can offer the highly precise and gentle ReLEx methods to enable you to remain independent from glasses or contact lenses. ReLEx is a trademark of Carl Zeiss Meditec that covers two so-called Only-Femto-LASIK operations - FLEx and SMILE. These are only performed using VisuMax - a state-of-the-art Zeiss femtosecond laser.
Bladeless and painless femto LASIK
Femto LASIK is the up-to-date version of LASIK and uses a femtosecond laser (laser scalpel), but no blade-microkeratome, to detach the flap. Before actual LASIK surgery, this flap is turned over like a book cover. The femto laser very precisely and gently cuts the tissue by using small gas bubbles, but not by a blade/knife-like incision, i.e. completely bladeless. Thus, such method is also safer: errors can be corrected already 5 seconds later - without any side effects and even during surgery. These are also the reasons why we perform conventional LASIK only upon the patient's express request. All our patients report after femto LASIK surgery that they did not feel any pain and are more than surprised how easy and fast the procedure is.
VisuMax of Carl Zeiss Meditec
VisuMax
The new VisuMax is a Carl Zeiss MediTec femto laser of the latest generation. Compared to its predecessors, it provides of an increased pulse frequency and cut precision due to the state-of-the-art Zeiss optics. This means shorter treatment time and higher accuracy for patients. Besides conventional femto LASIK it also enables two completely new femto LASIK procedures - Femto Lenticule Extraction (FLEx) and Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE), which perform correction of ametropia only by using the femto laser. Furthermore, the VisuMax can also be used for corneal transplantations. Another very important advantage for patients is that fixation of the eye during treatment is not performed like with the conventional LASIK, i.e. by using a painful suction ring, but by using an painfree anatomically shaped contact glass without any suction or pressure. Most people regard this to be far more comfortable.
Only-Femto-LASIK FLEx and SMILE (ReLEx)
Femto Lenticule Extraction (FLEx) is a new method that we offer since the beginning of 2010. With the FLEx method, both the flap cut and the actual laser treatment are exclusively performed by using the VisuMax. In comparison, conventional femto LASIK first prepares the flaps and then uses the excimer laser MEL80 to perform the actual correction of ametropia. The innovative FLEx method was developed by the company Zeiss, and is successfully used since 2008. Further information on the ReLEx can be found on the website of our partner company Premium Eyes. The SMILE procedure is an even more gentle version of such method; here, the lenticle, i.e. the lens cut by the femto laser, is removed via an opening only measuring 3 mm - completely without the flap, which is common with the Lasik method.
Further LASIK methods
